RADICAL JEWISH CULTURE, THE NEW YORK MUSICAL SCENE 1980-2000

MUSEE D'ART ET D'HISTOIRE DU JUDAISME - FROM 9th APRIL TO 18th JULY 2010



In the maelstrom of New York in the 80s and 90s, musicians laid claim once again to what been a flourishing intellectual and cultural Jewish heritage. Heavily present in the area of traditional music and alternative scenes of rock, punk jazz and world music, these musicians, including John Zorn, David Krakauer, Anthony Coleman and Marc Ribot rediscovered the klemzer, the repertory of Eastern European Jewish music. The exhibition presents a great number of previously unseen sound visual recordings, and is accompagnied by a music festival.
