JEAN LEON GEROME

MUSEE D'ORSAY - From 18th October to 23rd January 2011
This pupil of Paul Delaroche, both a painter and a sculptor, made a name for himself at the Salon of 1846 with the painting "the coke fight". Gerome drew his inspiration from history, from classical Antiquity, but also from his travels in Italy, Turkey or on the banks of the Danube. He met with great success in the United States where the art dealer Adolphe Goupil made a name for him through photographic reproductions. This retrospective presents a body of work that pays great attention to detail and where his genius in the setting the scene is undeniable.

LOUISE BOURGEOIS

MAISON DE BALZAC - from 3rd of November 2010 to 6th February 2011

After the spectacular retrospective that toured London, New York and Paris, it was Louis Bourgeois 'wish to present this exhibition on Eugenie Grandet in the privacy of the Maison de Balzac. Louise Bourgeois sees Eugenie Grandet as a victim of her obedience to her father. This complex character also provides a means for the artist, in the evening of her life, to pay tribute to her mother, a tapestry-maker, by using embroidery and sewing. The works on display evoke passing time, useless occupations, withering and solitude.

INVESTIGATION OF A DOG

LA MAISON ROUGE - from 24th October 2010 to 16th January 2011

Investigation of a Dog is the first collective exhibition organised by face, the groupof European contemporary art foundations to which La Maison Rouge belongs. Borrowed from Franz Kafka, the exhibition title questions the artists about the limits of their life and the meaning of the community to which they belong. The artists on display use a new language to analyse society and its mechanisms, by creating their very own universes that are open to the world.
