New Year's in Paris

Paris is a town that knows how to celebrate. In fact, it's true that in a sense every day in Paris is something of a celebration.

New Year's Eve in Paris can take the form of family fun, a night out on the town, or one of the many wonderful events that Parisians and visitors use to ring in the New Year. We recommend looking for an apartment in Paris well in advance. But even if you don't, you may yet find something "last minute," and www.mykeystoparis.com has a wide selection of possibilities to explore.

If fine dining and sightseeing are your first love, it's an excellent time to book a Seine cruise. There are themes available for couples such as Romantic Night dinner cruises for two. Be sure to inquire in advance.

As in the rest of France, New Year's (also known as "St. Sylvestre") for many means flowing champagne, kisses on the cheek and joyful cries of "Bonne Annee!" It also may feature heated wine (much like warm cider) called "vin chaud," and apple cider itself, which has only a mild alcoholic content. Of course, non-alcoholic beverages are also plentiful in supply!

Some popular treats include chocolate and novelty candies that have wrappers that pop like firecrackers. Look for these in the many grocery stores in Paris. And of course, there are actual firecrackers, which are legal and enjoyed by many. You should be aware that part of the experience of being out on the town means fireworks, so use reasonable caution and try and get into the holiday spirit that fills the streets.

The Champs-Elysees is the equivalent of New York's Times Square, "the" place where people flock to have fun, although you may want to opt for a different evening if you dislike crowds. As always in Paris, there is the occasional danger of pickpockets, but the celebratory vibe is generally harmless. If you want a somewhat more sedate sendoff for the New Year, you may want to find a secluded spot somewhere in view of the Eiffel Tower, which hosts a dazzling display at midnight. The Pont d'Alma is a particularly wonderful place to stand, as it affords a great view and there are several cafés here offering both moderate and pricey menus to enjoy.

If you want a different sort of experience, the Sacre Coeur Cathedral in the Montmartre is a mix of peaceful, spiritual joy with a bit of revelry mixed in. As this is Paris' highest point, the view of the city here is spectacular (although nowhere near enough to see the Eiffel Tower). There are also many clubs and bars to enjoy here at a leisurely pace, but be aware there may be a bit of climbing on these ancient, hilltop streets. The Montmartre was featured in the movie "Amelie" and is, for many, one of Paris' most special places.

If you love live performance, this may be one of the best times of the year to book that visit to the Moulin Rouge cabaret or at the Lido. Located in the quirky, fading red-light district of Pigalle, the Lido is just south of the Montmartre.

Obviously restaurants all over Paris go "all out" on this special day and night, offering once-a-year menus from the economical to the luxurious. While there may be more formal dress codes at certain restaurants (be sure to check in advance, as well as take out an advance reservation when you can), feel free to hit the town otherwise in jeans and enjoy the casualness of the citywide good times.

One thing's for certain: you'll have fun during these celebrations, and find that just being in Paris means you have plenty to celebrate about. Bonne Annee!

Christmas in Paris

For many, surely there's no better time of year than Christmas, that beautiful holiday season associated with magical lights and heartwarming symbols.

And Paris is no exception. In fact, to spend the holidays in Paris is to know one of the most magical times of year this beautiful city has to offer. You'll find this enchanting season brings out some of the best sights and sounds this city has to offer.

Each year, the city is dressed up in some of the prettiest Christmas lights imaginable. The Avenue des Champs-Elysées is perhaps one of the most obvious and beautiful places to see Christmas ligjts, beginning as early as November 26th and generally lasting until midway through January.

Those drawn to the mystical Montmartre area of Paris will want to see the splendid lights at top of la Butte Montmartre, beginning around December first and lasting until the end of January. Combining this with a trip to the enchanting Sacré Coeur Cathedral is highly recommended. No matter what your religious bent, the energy of this place, Paris' highest point, is sure to instill a sense of peace in travelers from every corner of the globe.

Lovers of fashion will no doubt want to see the lights along the Avenue Montaigne, center of so many fashion shops, or the Place Vendôme, with its famous jewelry stores such as Cartier.

Needless to say, lovers of art will not be disappointed at the lights the Louvre, and the trendy Marais/Les Halles area will also have its share of charms. After all, this is one of Paris' most chic areas.

The bigger stores will also have their own displays, often featuring animated dolls and puppets, so be sure to pass by the huge displays at Galleries Lafayette, Printemps, Au Bon Marché and BHV (Bazar de l'Hotel de Ville).

Of course, what trip to Paris would be complete without shopping? From big stores to small markets, you can be sure Paris will accommodate you well in that regard.

Christmas masses abound, from thoughtful masses at the beautiful American Cathedral to spectacular masses such as the Eglise de la Madeleine on Dec. 24th and 25th.

Lovers of music will want to check out the Festival d'Art Sacré de la Ville de Paris, an annual festival dedicated to sacred and religious music, held throughout Paris in various locations, from St. Eustache and St. Roch, to the Museum of Judaic History and Art.

The Christmas Tree Fashion show (Sapins de Noël Fashion) is a fun and novel thing to do for the holidays, with dozens of Christmas trees designed by the world's oldest fashion school, ESMOD.

Popular events among Parisians include the Giant Ferris Wheel (La Grande Roule) at the Place de la Concorde beginning until September and lasting until January. Spectacular views of the city can be had from here!

There's also a giant Christmas tree in front of the Notre Dame, a Russian Christmas Circus, and much more.

Of course, this just scratches the surface of the many wonderful things to see and do in Paris during one of the calendar's most fun and joyous times of year. No matter what's at the top of your "to do" list in Paris during the holidays, an apartment in Paris from www.mykeystoparis.com puts you in the center of fun.

"Joyeux Noël et Joyeuses Fêtes" (Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays) and we look forward to seeing you in Paris!

Porte de Versailles. A place to do business

Paris is not only a world-class vacation and holiday destination, but increasingly has become a destination of choice for those wishing to do business.

After all, France is centrally located in Western Europe, meaning it's accessible to a variety of European and international companies. The glamour and fun of the city also make it a "natural" when it comes to hosting business meetings.

Fortunately, businesses on a budget (think "start-up"), or really any business that values the bottom line, have options. For many, an affordable Paris apartment rental from an established company like www.mykeystoParis.com means substantial savings over a hotel, and often represents a space and "lifestyle" upgrade, as well. More space. A private kitchen and dining area for meals at home. And more money to spend while in Paris.

In a sign of Paris' steady growth as a center for business planning and development, Paris has continued to create and expand several commerce and meeting centers. Perhaps one of the most impressive of these is the Paris Porte de Versailles exhibition center.

Located just south of central Paris, near Orly airport, Porte de Versailles has no less than eight separate exhibition halls, with nearly a quarter of a million square meters. It is easily accessible from central Paris by train and metro.

Porte de Versailles is France's top exhibition center and ranks seventh in all of Europe. Each year, more than 200 conventions and exhibitions find their way here, hosting more than 6 million people.

Just some of the exhibitions held at the Paris Porte de Versailles exhibition center are WSN Développement ("Who's Next"), the Nautical Trade Show of Paris ("Salon Nautique de Paris"), and many others.

There are many Paris apartments available near this important area. But fortunately, if you're coming to Paris for an event held at the convention space, you aren't limited to finding somewhere to live in the immediate area. Two factors work strongly in your favor: first, the rather small geographic spread of central Paris. And secondly, the fact that Paris' metro and train system is one of the most developed in the world.

Feel free to look for an apartment anywhere in central Paris, and particularly on the Left Bank, south of the Seine. With all there is to see and experience in Paris, you'll find the choice pays dividends beyond the monetary. (Although chances are good you'll be saving a little pocket money, too.)

With a little planning, you'll quickly find a route that can whisk you from your temporary home to and from the exhibition space. This will leave you time in the evening or morning to find a café for a little reading, some dinner, and quite possibly even a show. And no trip to Paris would be complete without some sightseeing, fine dining and a walk along the Seine.

Living in central Paris means the ability the see and do all that Paris has to offer. And in the end, living life to its fullest and bringing a smile to the table is always good business.

The Beaujolais Nouveau

The third Thursday of every November is the date for more than 1,000,000 cases of Beaujolais Nouveau to begin shipment across the world.

This wildly popular, controversial (to certain connoisseurs) wine has become a staple of the industry. This light, pink wine is very lightweight, even for a Beaujolais, which is normally lightweight already.

The flavor has very little tannin, due to the way it is produced, meaning it has a lightweight flavor that may even recall the white zinfandels that were so popular some years back in the United States.

The Beaujolais nouveau is produced in the Beaujolais region of France, from Gamay grapes. It is one of the least fermented wines (for only three weeks), after which it is released on France's popular "Beaujolais Nouveau Day," the third Thursday of November. (According to French law, Beaujolais Nouveau can be released no earlier than this date.) The process of creation is rushed, but so is the rush to get it to consumers, who have made an annual celebration out if its release.

Critics say these wines are immature and crude. In fact, one critic likened the wine to consuming raw cookie dough. (Of course, ice cream connoisseurs know there is no shortage of popularity of this ingredient.)

65 million bottles are the result of all this fun/madness, comprising nearly 50% of the Beaujolais region's annual wine production. Efforts to be first to get their Nouveau to market are often as entertaining and the consumption itself, with everything from helicopters to hot air balloons, elephants and even rickshaws getting into the act.

The wine's popularity began in the regions of Beaujolais and Lyons, eventually becoming a celebration that spread to other areas.

Critics also say Beaujolais Nouveau is more a triumph of marketing than anything else, especially by George Duboeuf, who sells more than 4 million bottles. In fact, Beaujolais Nouveau accounts for more than a fifth of his production. Regardless, its popularity is undeniable.

You might say its popularity is due in large party to its versatility. After all, it contains some of the character of red wine with much of the refreshing elements of white wine. Like white wine, it is best enjoyed chilled, which adds yet another refreshing aspect to the way it is consumed. So while critics may scoff, the wine's drinkability adds much to its appeal, and makes it able to capture people with a wide variety of tastes.

Then of course, is the celebratory aspect. The event, and the specific release night, mean celebrating with friends, family, and even a sense of sharing a glass with the entire world's wine-drinking community.

Almost any apartment in Paris will serve you well during this historic event. No matter where you stay on this special night, you're sure to run into someone eager to share a glass, tell a joke and spent another amazing night in one of the world's most fun-filled cities.

By the way, do you want to know the right words to put through the conversation ? Paris Version à la Française suggests you to say :
- at the view : "jolie robe", "belle couleur" (cerise, rubis.. ) (cherry, purple-pink..)
- in the mouth : "léger", "fruité", "tendre", "gouleyant" (easy-drinking)..
.. Enjoy next thursday night

Soldes by Paris - Special Discount

In French, "soldes" means "discount," and this is just what to expect in 2009's upcoming "Soldes by Paris" shopping extravaganza.

Beginning around January 14th, the Paris Visitors Bureau will organize the 3rd Annual Soldes by Paris, with a new website www.shoppingbyparis.com and tons of special opportunities to shop and save.

MyKeystoParis.com, as a member of the Paris Visitors Bureau, is also pleased to offer special discounts during the first 4 days of the event, with 50% off commission fees* (apartment price unchanged) for their selection of premium apartment rentals in Paris.

Staying in an apartment offers substantial advantages over a hotel during this exciting and fun event. Simply preparing meals in your own apartment's kitchen, for example, means less money spent on eating out and more money to shop. (And, of course, more money to spend on the occasional fine-dining experience.)

The idea behind Soldes by Paris is to increase awareness of Paris as a place to shop. Although Paris is already one of the world's most well-known cultural and fashion destinations, many people feel intimidated by the prospect of shopping in Paris. A seemingly endless array of options and price points makes taking the first step difficult for many.

To that end, shoppers are guided through a dizzying selection of Parisian shopping options via a variety of specially designed, themed "circuits."

Last year's circuits were as follows:

Chic – The art of stylish French living
Creative – For visitors of an artistic bent and for anyone creative
Original – The funny, novel and unique
Romantic – Ideas perfect for couples, from gift-giving to everyday living
Trendy – The cutting-edge, trendy and forward-looking

Would you prefer to be accompanied by a real Parisian, have the benefit of her experience in shopping and at the same time improve your French during your shopping tour, contact Paris Version à la Française, It’s the best way for you to become a real Parisian shopper for a few days and enjoy speaking French.

In 2008, more than 1,500 retail entities and nearly 500 restaurants and hotels took part.

Getting in on the act each year are a wide variety of retail outlets, from major department stores to small, hip boutiques and "concept" stores. Established luxury brands can be perused alongside fun, exciting offerings from young and up-and-coming designers.

But as we all know, part of the fun of shopping is meals and related excursions. Fortunately, Soldes by Paris has partnered with a wide variety of Parisian restaurants and other entertainment outlets, offering special deals and fun outings during the event.

Exclusive discount offers for participants include meals, massages, and events.

The best way to get started is to pick up a Welcome Bag, which includes a guide and vouchers for the special discount opportunities.

Paris Version à la Française takes part to the operation “Soldes by Paris” too and is pleased to offer a 15% discount on the linguistic and cultural program of January.

For more information, contact the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau at www.en.parisinfo.com.
