JAMES ENSOR

MUSEE D'ORSAY - Autumn 2009

James Ensor (1860-1949), who painted The Temptation of Saint Anthony, was a major figure in the Belgian avant-garde at the end of the 19th century and a frontrunner in the development of Expressionism at the star of the 20th century. His multi-faceted work, marked firstly by Impressionism, then by Symbolism, influenced generations of artists.

This exhibition rehabilitates James Ensor through 90 works which represent his life's work, displayed by theme. Paintings, engravings and drawings offer a rounded view of this daring, innovative and masterful art.
