titan, tintoretto, veronese. Venetian rivalries

Musée du Louvre - From 18 september 2009 to January 2010

The exhibition displays the works of the three key players in 16th century Venetian painting : Titian, an inventive genius whose style disconcerts through its constant renewal, Tintoretto, a dynamic genius who developed art with a superhuman energy, and Veronese, a decorative genius whose apollonian serenity fascinated artists right up to the 20th century. A reflection of their time, their chosen themes reveal the tastes, turmoil and torments of Venetians in the 16th century: the anxieties - the surprising despair and violence depicked in the sacred paintings despite the area's hedonistic reputation - but also the ever-present cult of profan beauty, starting with women.
