"THE GATES OF HEAVEN" : VISIONS OF THE WORLD IN ANCIENT EGYPT

MUSEE DU LOUVRE - From 6 March to June 2009

In the language of the ancient Egyptians, the Gates of Heaven refer to the doors of the tabernacle housing the statue of a god. Symbolising the point of entry to another world, this phrase also applies to other elements of the egyptian universe. The exhibition invites you to a journey through these worlds, passing through the gates of heaven, the heavens being both the perceptible space visible from Earth and the dimension housing the divine.
The event presents more than 300 works covering the periodes from the pre-dynastic era to Roman times, replacing the objects in their social religious and artistic context.
